Every commercial driver’s license (CDL) holder knows their CDL is a privilege, not a right. From the moment they obtain it, they must never take it lightly – because the reality is that if they don’t obey all state and federal laws related to transportation safety and regulations, their CDL might be in jeopardy.

So, how can someone lose their CDL, and what steps can they take to prevent such an outcome?

Several things can cause you to lose your CDL and your livelihood

There are a variety of reasons why you may be at risk of losing your CDL, including the following:

  • Accumulating too many traffic violations or having multiple moving violations can result in a suspension or revocation of your CDL.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is extremely dangerous and often results in a suspension of your CDL when convicted.
  • Railroad-highway grade crossing violations

Additionally, excessive speeding, improper or erratic lane changes, reckless driving, and following too closely are also considered serious violations that can lead to disqualification.

If a CDL holder has been ticketed for a violation while operating their commercial vehicle, they must notify their employer within 30 days from the date of conviction. Failure to do so could result in further penalties or suspension of their license. It is essential for CDL holders to remain aware of their applicable regulations in order to avoid potential violations and any resulting consequences.

Being disqualified from driving privileges due to a violation can have severe consequences. Not only does it affect your income, you may also face fines and other penalties. If you’ve been charged with a traffic violation, then it’s essential that you discuss your situation with someone who can help you avoid losing your CDL.
